World’s Tallest Climbing Wall Set To Open
On 1st October 2011, CommRow is set to open in Reno, Nevada. The people behind the project are describing it as Reno’s first ‘Urban Adventure Destination’. The site features the world’s tallest climbing wall, built to international competition specifications. Located on the outside of the 16-story building, it towers 164 feet above the Reno arch. The wall features routes for all abilities.
The venue also incorporates a bouldering centre, slacklines and an abundance of event space, as well as plenty of food outlets and bars, which are situated in an area labelled The Row. Customers will be able to choose from a wide variety of cuisines, and the various bars will serve a diverse selection of beers, wines and cocktails. For those who prefer the drink a bit harder, there will also be more than 100 varieties of tequila on offer (just don’t try climbing the wall afterwards!) The bouldering centre is overlooked by the second floor where the eateries and drinking establishments are located.
There will also be various events at CommRow’s 2 entertainment venues, which are known as Cargo and Centric. These venues will host performances from local artists as well as appearances from bigger acts on US tours. Cargo can accommodate 400 people for events like this, but during the day it will function as a fitness centre, where core training will be the focus.
A range of other attractions are due to open in 2012. These include the HANG Hotel, which will allow visitors to bring their pets, as well as an outdoor ‘Adventure Deck’ where BMX and skate parks will feature alongside outdoor bouldering and other urban/adventure activities.
CommRow’s developers are optimistic that the centre will help to put Reno on the map, providing something the locals can enjoy whilst also bringing people into the city from other destinations. The ‘Comm’ in the name signifies community, highlighting how the developers hope to help regenerate downtown Reno.
Until now, Holland was home to the world’s tallest climbing wall. The Excalibur, at the Bjoeks Climb Centre in Groningen, is 121ft tall with a 36ft overhang, made all the more dramatic by the fact that it is surrounded by flat fields.
If you’re a keen climber, you’ll love these Podsacs.
